A high-floating caddis dry with bold, fish-finding contrast. The Elk Hair Caddis (Black) pairs a buoyant elk-hair wing with tight, palmered hackle and a dark body—throwing a crisp silhouette that stays on top in riffles and pocket water and stands out in glare or light stain.
-
When it excels: Late spring through early fall; evening caddis activity; dawn/dusk, overcast days, and lightly stained flows
-
Why it works: Elk hair and dense hackle keep it riding high for long, drag-free drifts; black body maximizes silhouette and visibility to fish
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook)
-
Ready to fish: Durable tie with consistent proportions; floats a light dropper comfortably
How to fish it
Dead-drift along seams and pocket edges; add short skitters or micro-twitches over riffles to trigger slashes. For a dry-dropper, tie 16–24" of 4–5X to the bend and trail a small pupa or midge. Use a 7.5–9 ft leader for easier turnover in chop.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing. Dress wing and hackle with gel/paste; refresh with a powder/shake desiccant after a dunk or fish to keep it riding high.
Satisfaction
30-day returns/exchanges.
