A high-floating caddis dry with bright, fish-finding visibility. The Elk Hair Caddis (Yellow) pairs a buoyant elk-hair wing and tight, palmered hackle with a sunny yellow body—throwing a crisp caddis silhouette that stays on top in riffles and pocket water.
-
When it excels: Late spring through early fall; evening caddis activity and sunny, breezy afternoons; riffles, pocket water, and foam lines
-
Why it works: Elk hair and hackle ride high for long drifts; yellow body boosts visibility and mimics light-toned adults
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook)
-
Ready to fish: Durable tie with consistent proportions; floats a light dropper comfortably
How to fish it
Dead-drift along seams and pocket edges, then add short skitters or micro-twitches over riffles to trigger slashes. For a dry-dropper, tie 16–24" of 4–5X to the bend and trail a small nymph or pupa. Use a 7.5–9 ft leader for easier turnover in chop.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing. Dress wing and hackle with gel/paste; revive with a powder/shake desiccant after a dunk or fish.
