A quick-sinking, buggy attractor nymph with a classic profile. The Half Back Bead Head Nymph pairs a bright bead and ribbed abdomen with a peacock-herl thorax and swept-back wing case, creating a chunky, suggestive silhouette that covers mayflies, stoneflies, and lake leeches.
-
When it excels: Spring through fall; riffles, knee-deep runs, and pocket water; lightly stained flows and post-rain bumps
-
Why it works: Bead drives fast sink while peacock herl adds lifelike shimmer; the “half-back” wing case and buggy thorax push a bold, edible profile
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook); also turns heads on stillwaters
-
Ready to fish: Durable wraps and consistent proportions for repeatable, bottom-tracking drifts
How to fish it
Dead-drift under an indicator at ~1.5× water depth or tightline/Euro with steady contact; add a small split shot 8–12" up if you aren’t ticking bottom. Run it as the point fly and trail a smaller pheasant tail or midge 12–18" behind. Finish each drift with a gentle lift to flash the wing case like an ascending nymph.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing to prevent hook corrosion.
