A versatile, do-it-all streamer with a natural, fishy tone. The Bead Head Woolly Bugger (Olive) pairs a sleek metal bead with a flowing marabou tail and palmered hackle—creating a leech/minnow silhouette that sinks quickly and moves naturally in both rivers and lakes.
-
When it excels: Year-round; overcast days and light stain; seams, pocket water, undercut banks, drop-offs, and weed edges
-
Why it works: Bead head gets it down fast; olive body reads natural in clear water; marabou and hackle breathe and pulse on every strip and swing
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook); also strong for smallmouth and stillwater rainbows
-
Ready to fish: Durable tie on a strong hook; consistent proportions for confident swings and strips
How to fish it
In rivers, swing across seams or strip–pause–strip along banks and boulders; slow the cadence in cold water and speed up slightly in stain. In lakes, count down to depth and retrieve with steady strips and pauses, or work parallel to weed edges. Use 2–4X tippet; add a sink-tip or poly leader when you need more depth. A loop knot enhances action.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing. Fluff marabou between fingers if it mats; reshape hackle as needed and check the hook point regularly.
