A lively topwater/swim pattern that draws explosive eats. The Swimming Frog throws a chunky, frog-shaped silhouette with kicking legs and a subtle wake—perfect for prowling bass along weed edges, lily pads, and undercut banks, and a thrilling change-up for big browns after dark.
-
When it excels: Late spring through early fall; warm evenings and low light; along pads, grass lines, wood, and shallow flats
-
Why it works: Buoyant head and kicking legs create a natural frog swim and audible “plop”; wide profile pushes water and calls fish from cover
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Largemouth and smallmouth bass; pike with a bite guard; opportunistic trophy brown trout at night
-
Ready to fish: Strong hook and durable construction for hard strip-sets and repeated casts around cover
How to fish it
Cast tight to cover and retrieve with short strip–pause–strip sequences that leave a steady V-wake; pause in pockets and at lane intersections to trigger the eat. Work parallel to weed edges and skip into holes in the pads. Use stout tippet (12–20 lb for bass/pike; 2–3X for trout) and a low, firm strip-set before lifting the rod.
Care
Rinse after use (especially after vegetation-heavy water) and air-dry thoroughly; reshape legs and head if compressed, and store where the fly can dry completely.
