A delicate, low-in-the-film emerger for picky trout. The CDC Gray Emerger (Loop Wing) shows a slim gray body, trailing shuck, and a buoyant CDC loop wing that shimmers and breathes—perfect for fish keyed to mayflies stuck in the surface.
- When it excels: Spring through fall during BWO/PMD-style hatches; overcast or calm evenings; soft seams, slick glides, and glassy tailouts
- Why it works: CDC loop wing traps micro-bubbles and adds lifelike movement; gray body and sparse shuck read “vulnerable emerger” without bulk
- Pack size: 3 flies
- Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook)
- Ready to fish: Sparse, consistent proportions for long, drag-free drifts on fine tippet
How to fish it
Use a 9–12 ft leader with 5X–6X and present slightly above rise rings; feed slack with reach or slack-line casts to keep it in the film. Fish 12–24" under a small dry as a sighter, or solo; finish each drift with a gentle lift to mimic an emerging takeoff.
Care
Avoid gel/silicone on CDC. After a fish or dunk, blot gently and revive with a powder/shake desiccant or amadou; keep the abdomen and shuck mostly untreated to preserve the low posture.
Satisfaction
