A buggy, lifelike soft hackle that covers both mayfly and caddis emergers. The Hare’s Ear Soft Hackle blends spiky hare’s-mask dubbing with a mobile partridge hackle, creating a natural, pulsing silhouette that trout crush on the swing, lift, or dead-drift.
-
When it excels: Spring through fall around mayfly/caddis activity; riffle tails, seams, gentle glides, and stillwater edges
-
Why it works: Guard hairs suggest legs and gills while the soft hackle breathes like real wings; the muted, natural tones read “food” in clear to lightly stained water
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook); bonus takes from stillwater cruisers and panfish
-
Ready to fish: Durable, sparse tie with consistent proportions for natural presentations
How to fish it
Cast down-and-across and let it swing slowly through the seam; add a gentle lift at the hang-down to trigger grabs. Dead-drift as a dropper beneath a dry or indicator, or fish two soft hackles 18–24" apart to cover different lanes. Use 4–5X in riffles; step down to 5–6X in slicks.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing to prevent hook corrosion. Smooth hackle fibers if they matte after a fish.
