A tiny, low-riding terrestrial/midge dry that fools picky sippers. The Black Gnat Parachute pairs a slim black body with parachute hackle and a high-visibility post, creating a flush-in-the-film footprint that reads “natural gnat/midge” in glassy slicks and gentle seams.
-
When it excels: Late spring through fall; calm evenings and overcast afternoons; spring creeks, tailouts, back eddies, and lake slicks
-
Why it works: Clean black silhouette matches gnats and midges; parachute rides low for drag-free drifts while the post aids tracking on fine tippet
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook); bonus panfish on stillwaters
-
Ready to fish: Sparse, durable tie with consistent proportions for delicate presentations
How to fish it
Use a 9–12 ft leader with 5X–6X and dead-drift over rise rings and soft seams; feed slack with reach or slack-line casts. Add tiny micro-twitches if fish inspect but won’t commit. It can carry a very small dropper (midge/pupa) 16–20" behind in calmer water.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing. Dress the post and hackle lightly; revive with a powder/shake desiccant after a dunk or fish, keeping the abdomen mostly untreated for a natural, in-the-film ride.
Satisfaction
