A delicate, early-season mayfly dry that shines on clear freestones and tailwaters. The Blue Quill’s slim blue-gray body, upright dun wings, and sparse hackle create a crisp, natural silhouette that fools selective trout in gentle riffles and glassy tailouts.
-
When it excels: Late winter through early spring during Blue Quill hatches; calm to lightly broken water; overcast afternoons
-
Why it works: Subtle blue-gray abdomen and clean Catskill-style profile match naturals; rides correctly in the film for convincing, drag-free drifts
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook)
-
Ready to fish: Sparse, durable tie with consistent proportions for lifelike presentations
How to fish it
Use a 9–12 ft leader with 5X–6X and make reach or slack-line casts to feed the drift over rise rings and soft seams. If fish inspect but won’t commit, drop one size or switch to a matching emerger before the peak, then a rusty spinner near dusk.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing. Dress wings/hackle lightly with gel or paste; revive with a powder/shake desiccant after a dunk or fish, keeping the abdomen mostly untreated.
Satisfaction
30-day returns/exchanges.
