A high-floating caddis dry with extra footprint and a stealthy tone. The Caddis Variant (Dark) uses a buoyant hair wing and dense, palmered hackle over a dark body—throwing a bold, stable silhouette that’s easy to track in chop and convincing in clear or lightly stained water.
-
When it excels: Late spring through early fall; evening caddis activity; riffles, pocket water, windy afternoons, and mixed light
-
Why it works: Heavier “variant” hackle rides high and stays upright; dark body matches common caddis adults and reads naturally against glare
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook)
-
Ready to fish: Durable tie with consistent proportions; floats a light dropper comfortably
How to fish it
Dead-drift along seams and pocket edges, then add short skitters or micro-twitches over riffles to trigger slashes. For a dry-dropper, tie 16–24" of 4–5X to the bend and trail a small pupa or midge. Shorten leaders (7.5–9 ft) in tight, broken water for easier turnover.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing. Dress wing and hackle with gel/paste; revive with a powder/shake desiccant after a dunk or fish.
