A fast-sinking, confidence attractor nymph for freestones and tailwaters. The Red Copper John’s slim wire body and heavy head get it down quickly, while the bright red abdomen and shiny wing case add just enough flash to pull strikes in riffles and pocket water.
-
When it excels: Spring through fall; riffles, runs, and pocket water; after light rain bumps; clear to lightly stained conditions
-
Why it works: Red wire abdomen provides flash and contrast; bead and wire build create a quick sink and slender, natural profile
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook)
-
Ready to fish: Durable wraps and consistent proportions for repeatable, long drifts
How to fish it
Dead-drift under an indicator at ~1.5× water depth or tightline/Euro as the point fly; add a small shot 8–12" above if you aren’t ticking bottom. Trail a smaller pheasant tail or midge 12–18" behind, and finish each drift with a gentle lift to suggest an ascending nymph.
Care
Rinse after use and air-dry before boxing to prevent hook corrosion.
Satisfaction
30-day returns/exchanges.
