A low-riding BWO emerger/dry that solves refusals. The Sparkle Dun Blue Wing Olive uses a comparadun-style deer-hair wing and a subtle, shimmering trailing shuck to mimic a freshly emerged mayfly stuck in the film—exactly what selective trout key on during cloudy hatches.
-
When it excels: Early spring and fall BWO hatches; overcast or drizzly days; soft seams, slick glides, and glassy tailouts
-
Why it works: Trailing shuck and no-hackle wing create a delicate, in-the-film silhouette that reads “vulnerable emerger” to picky fish
-
Pack size: 3 flies
-
Targets: Trout (rainbow, brown, brook)
-
Ready to fish: Sparse, clean tie with consistent proportions for long, drag-free drifts
How to fish it
Use a 9–12 ft leader with 5X–6X and make reach or slack-line casts to feed the drift over rise rings; present slightly above the fish and let it ride. Add tiny micro-twitches if they inspect but won’t commit. Keep the abdomen/shuck untreated; dress only the wing lightly. If refusals start, drop one size or switch to a BWO emerger before the peak, then a rusty spinner near dusk.
Care
Blot dry after a fish and revive with a powder/shake desiccant. Avoid heavy gel on the body or shuck to maintain the low-in-the-film posture.
Satisfaction
30-day returns/exchanges.
